Help. How do I make this effect?

Can anyway suggest how the vocal effect at the start of this song might have been created?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rn4qYZeiJHc
It tone changes and yet the notes that are being sung dont seem to change.
I know the guy who made it and asked him about it but I dont think he completely understands what he did.
Any suggestions would be helpful.
Thanks in Advance

not vocoder, i dont think you could get that sort of pitch tracking in a vocoder.
formant shift in autotune.

few ways to do it.
http://www.camelaudio.com/Alchemy.php listen to the resynthesis demo on the top of that page to hear some incredible morphing done on vocals.
you could also use a format shifter.
there was a roland sampler that could do stuff like that too, forget the name of it.

Kerovee is a free autotuning vst. It has a formant control that would probably get similar results.
I am so happy that someone decided to make a free autotune vst. hahah

I agree that this is not a vocoder but autotune.
Don't do it! It's not worth it!
Sooooo tired of autotune.... You don't want to sound like Cher do you?

I think it is kind of funny when people show how little they know about autotune by using the average joe "cher" complaints etc.
Yeah- singers should be able to sing- but sometimes a take needs some massaging to sit right in mixes even when the good singers hit it- maybe the take was rushed or the clock was ticking or the engineer got fed up- but this is where autotune can be great.
Anyone who actually understands how to use the ACTUAL autotune package that isn't the bargain (EFX or the Logic knockoff effect) version knows how to use it without it sounding "like Cher" or whatever. It's a tool that working producers and engineers can get a lot of use out of if they aren't busy sticking their heads in the sand- which ultimately equals less work.
And yeah- there are a lot of tricks and new possibilities to come from radical pitch manipulation and formant/throat length adjustments- not just on vox but on instruments too- and NO it is not at all the same as shifting pitch in Ableton.

This topic is about the vocal effect that psychohagis heard.
THAT is what I am referring to.
I will revise my statement.
Don't do the Cher/Kanye West style autotune effect!
It's not worth it!

Well played
And I totally agree that that particular use of the effect was pretty well over before it began- but - I do hate the sort of prevalent anti-attitude to form around it because there is always room to add a skill to the repertoire and I have to say that a little corrective surgery in one's toolbox- while it may be responsible for some laziness here and there- it sure can save an ass one in a while.
