i have heard of bands going on stage and recording an album of previously un released new material but i have never heard any.
the only thing close to this that i have heard is bitched brew.
im sure there has to be alot of classic music like this out there?

it could be music recorded with an audience or just out side.
the main thing is that its live un edited and original songs...nothing the band released prior to recording live.

fantastic album. have it on vinyl. the funny thing is they decided to leave the "side 4" (b-side of 2nd LP) empty, because there was too much music for 1 LP but not enough for both sides of the second

* do you mean miles davis' bitches brew? fantastic album. 'big fun' is of the same session, iirc.
* frank zappa used to do this all the time: play new songs live, record practically every show, take the best cuts, and edit/overdub them in the studio. his live albums contain lots of unreleased material, his studio albums consist of a lot of base live tracks worked out in the studio.
'roxy & elsewhere' and 'live in ny' come to mind as live albums containing lots of previously unreleased tracks.
maybe frank was misleading us, but on 'baby snakes' and 'ship arriving too late to save a drowning witch', you can clearly hear an audience at the end of the albums.
on the 'as an am' official 'bootleg' album, you can hear frank in an interview being mad at bootleggers because they put low quality recordings of unreleased songs on the market before he had the chance to do it himself.

Negative - Opiate contains both live and studio tracks, as does Salival. Salival contains unreleased tracks such as No Quarter (not Live) and Maynards Dick (not live). Opiate only contains two live tracks recorded in New York Dec 31, 1991 and Jan 1 1992. If you REALLY want some different live versions of Tool, I recommend tracking down the rare "Tales From The Darkside". There are also a plethora of live bootlegs available through the net.
Sorry, I had to speak up as a fan(atic) of Tool (the band, not the member).

I believe the first Jane's Addiction album (called Jane's Addiction) was live and all unreleased at that point. Studio versions of those songs then made it onto other albums.

+1 for zappa's stuff. he would do all sorts of crazy shit like overdubbing a guitar solo from a live performance into a studio version of the song, etc. he's put out like 20 live albums so that shouldn't be a problem.
jazz from the 50's & early 60's- a lot of albums are live performances.
pink floyd- ummugumma is a fucking awesome live album and i think some of those songs were never released as studio versions (i'm thinking "careful with that ax, eugene")
phish also has tons of songs they play live that they've never recorded and put on an album, but you'll have to like that wanky jammy stuff.

i never knew he would write a song and then play it live almost the next day.
i was listening to "why does it hurt when i pee" i guess they wrote it on the buss and then played it the next day.
