Does Ableton have ASIO direct monitoring?

Post by nickels » Thu Dec 02, 2004 2:19 am

I have been messing around with a demo version of Ableton 4 and I was curious if it has support for ASIO direct monitoring. When I click monitor when recording a loop I hear the input signal plus the monitor signal. I believe that ASIO direct monitoring would mute the input signal and only allow me to hear the monitor signal. Any ideas? It's probably just a setting I am not hip to.

BTW, I am using a M Audio Firewire 410 audio interface.

You control direct monitoring on the FW410 directly in the cards interface. Send the input to one of the outputs (and enable direct monitoring). Nothing to do with Live.

Of course the hardware has direct monitoring, but it does indeed have everything to do with Ableton Live...true ASIO direct monitoring requires a software application to access the hardware's direct monitoring feature and not monitor/process a signal through the software (which adds latency b/c of the signal processing). In other words, when you select "monitor" in Ableton Live it shouldn't process anything (however it does...check Cubase SX or Nuendo to see how ASIO direct monitoring is implemented).

I guess I could just turn monitoring off when recording...it's not that big of a deal really. Just curious. I am assuming the answer is no, Ableton Live doesn't support ASIO 2.0 direct monitoring.
