incremental save please ableton,
very useful to go back when you've made a mistake a while ago...

The only problem i would see arise whilst "implementing" this would be samples in many self-contained sets might weight too much, or if they chose to keep all the samples of the differnt versions of the songs in the same folder then youll have problems when you edited a sample in one version of the set and you load it up in another...

I think that they will address this with OSX Lion, which has auto-save as a built in feature. As far as PC's are concerned, I dunno.

Wow, requested in 2004 lol. I guess there isn't much demand :/. I'd love this feature though.

While that's great potentially, that's no reason to not implement this with Live. In macOS Ableton could make use of the OS native versioning system.
