Does the Max debugger actually work in M4L?

I ran the message ordering tutorial and the debugger stopped in the tutorial patch at the appropriate place when I clicked the first button. Excellent!
I went to my own patch and added some breakpoints. Enabled debugging. Nothing. Discovered the patch was no longer actually working. Then Max beachballed and I had to force quit it after it didn't seem to ever be coming back.
Restarted Live & Max. Tried again. This time the debugger window popped open but was empty of information. Had it stopped? The continue and step buttons were enabled but didn't appear to do anything.
I tried turning debugging off & on. Nothing.
I removed my breakpoints and set watchpoints. No data. The patch isn't working again.
I tried to quit Max but got a dialog:
Quitting is not possible now.
Before you can quit, you need to finish debugging.
Except I am not debugging, debugging is disabled in the Debug menu.
It's all feeling rather flaky and making me wonder if the debugger works properly in the M4L context.
Live 8.1.4
Max 5.1.4 (42462)
OSX 10.6.4
