I'm planning to get a pitch correction plugin. I foresee that I will mostly be using it for minor pitch correction (i'm a decent, but not mindblowing, singer) and possibly transposition (in other words, I'm not really concerned with Melodyne's Direct Note Access thing, I don't do much sampling as of now). I'm currently deciding between Autotune EVO and Melodyne Assistant. So far Autotune has the advantage of speed, while Melodyne has price and the ability to fix timing. However, I am currently undecided on which sounds better (in terms of keeping the timbre intact and undistorted while adjusting the pitch).

Which do you feel sounds better? And are there any other programs in the same price/system range ($300 or under, native VST) that you feel are better?

not sure of the price, but Waves Tune really stomps on Autotune IMHO

A lot of engineers seem to think that Melodyne sounds better than Autotune. I started with Melodyne Uno (dunno if they still have that product, I don't think so) in standalone mode, but these days I use Melodyne editor, most often as a plug-in. It has some stability issues; it's workable, but a little fragile. I'm not sure what you mean by "speed". Both autotune and melodyne can bulk-tune a song, but that's probably not what you want from your description. I fine-tune a lot of vocals, and I do it note-by-note. Bulk tuning gives lots of artifacts, especially on note transitions, vibrato, and so on. It's really not appropriate for lead vocals that are supposed to sound natural.

I'm mainly looking for which one does note-by-note with the fewest artifacts, but I might do some bulk tuning without concern for artifacts - I sometimes sing rough vocal lines to give to my dedicated singers to practice, and since I don't sing perfectly I want to be able to fix where I'm off so they know exactly what to sing. Waves Tune is something above $400, so well beyond my budget. So far, Melodyne is winning, mainly because it's $200 vs. $240 for Autotune (the extra $40 is for the dongle, and I don't want a dongle).

Yea get Melodyne if you can, u will be amazed at the quality of this plug, especially the new updates. It really gives u immense flexibility and sounds so good. I have only really used on a couple of vocal parts, but got results almost instantly. I hate the well known auto-tune effect though, never liked it, never will so don't use he plugin to do this. Please.

But yea Melodyne great for tweak pitch and the ui is so well designed. All in all, fantastic plugin. I also used a free plugin (think it was called g-tune or something) and got good results, but just not the same quality as higher end plugs.

are you mac or PC ?

If mac, Bias's Pitchcraft for $149 got a decent review in Sound On Sound.
