Reverse cymbal sounds...

You know the sound I'm talking about, the swooshing sound you get when you play a cymbal crash in reverse. Like the Beatles constantly used in Sgt Peppers.

What the easiest way to make a sound like that?

I don't know if I'm walking right into a trap here but.... how about taking a cymbal sample and reversing it? 8O

take a crash cymbal sound with a long, long sustain, place a reverb with a hell lot of tail on it (long decay, fairly big to ultra large room, or a convolution of a church or other giant halls which produce real long reverb tails) record it and stick it into a sampler play it reversed and record the whole lot, leave enough topping and tailing (front and back end) to not chop off some of the long reverb tail or early reflections.

voila yourownbackwardsswooshcymbalsound

p.s. and if you want to have the swoosh real extreme, EQ the highs of the reverb bus.

Good suggestions Axel, I couldn't have put it any better.

I would definitely use that approach. For extra funkiness you might also add in a modulation effect such as phase/flange to really get a whooshing Small Faces 'Itchycoo Park' or /late Beatles-esque sound.

+1 to SubFunk and j.peeba, there are also a lot of sample libraries with reversed cymbals like Ueberschall, ProducerLoops, etc.

oh yes, oh yes,

i love just a tad of phaser / flanger on a reverb bus, just to breathe a bit more life into it.

btw, also a good trick for basslines, setting up a bus with a tad, real tiny weeny tad of reverb and a phaser / flanger... just to make it breathe.

Indeed.

Perfectly stated and the execution of which would be more than attainable to those most amateur among us........
