mastered tunes above 0db

I've wondered this a long time: How is it that an already released tune (read: mastered) imported into Live can consistently have peaks above 0db if the fader is set to 0db. What am I not understanding about mastering/digital audio?

Cheers

Yeah, the time-stretching that the warping does can introduce artifacts that peak above the original mastered tune.

is it a mp3 file? Decoding mp3 can also result in weird peaks sometimes.
