noob frustration #1. getting a clip to play in clip view

OK, I'm a total noob with Live. I start with the built in tutorial section. I'm also hooked into the "tour of live" video.

5 minutes in they click on a clip to open it in clip view. Gee, that guys clip is playing by itself. Mine isn't. How'd he get the clip to play? I don't know, he and the text don't say. There is a speaker icon that I can click in clip view, but the whole bloody song plays along with the clip.

I've searched high, I've searched low. I checked in the info panel what every little button does and no bloody way to make the clip play by itself. So I check the manual. I can't find a single word that says "Press THIS to play clip".
Maybe its right in front of my nose and I'm blinded in my rage to see it.

So, before I pull what little of my hair out, can somebody please tell me how to get the ^#*$ @$%*$ clip in clip view to play by itself and not the whole arrangement along with it?

Apparently same thing goes for playing a midi clip by itself. Tracks aren't solo'd so that ain't it

Thank You, I got a feeling this program is going to have me here a lot in the coming weeks :)

Thanks.

Well, I'm not sure why this is such a complicated issue.

You're in session view. You double click on a clip which opens that clip in clip view. In the ableton video, the clip is played by itself. You NEED to be able to hear it by itself in order to hear the manipulations you do to it.

This should be a very basic thing.

Although I could solo the lane that clip is in, this wasn't done in the video...and its a bit of a kludge.

So how can I listen to a clip (or a midi clip for that matter) by itself with hearing all the other clips along with it?

Which video did you watch? This one?

If it was the one above @5mins, then he probably started the clip by pressing one of the buttons on his controller. Or he clicked with his mouse on the clip but that part was cut out afterwards.

Hi, yes thats the video except I watched from abletons site.

Although, as I already pointed out in my first post.... when you place your cursor on the bottom half of the audio in clip view, it turns into a speaker icon.
But as I also explained, clicking the icon on that audio file in clip view plays everything!!

This should be real $@#%&@ simple. Open in clip view, click on audio or press a little play button somewhere and the damn clip plays!

What did I do here...fall down the rabbit hole into some kinda bizzaro universe? 8O

HEY ABLETON...HOW DO I GET THE BLOODY CLIP TO PLAY BY ITSELF!!!!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH

ShelLuser, unfortunately I don't know from livesets as I just installed this program and am starting to learn from scratch. Learning livesets seems down the road a piece.

I have it in my head, as in every other daw I use, that opening up a clip in its own editor plays only that audio clip.

1thelark, from watching it i think I may have figures it out....

In order for me to hear the clip by itself, I think I need to actually click that little arrow thats on the left side of whatever clip that I have open in clip view.

I'll bet that's it.

Well that what you want is shown in the video. And you can find it in the manual.

Right, I understand. However, when I look in the manual in the 'clip view' section, I couldn't find a sentence that says something like.."to hear the clip, press play arrow next to that clip up in session view", or whatever.

Maybe its there and I missed it, I don't know. Its just that in some other place in the manual it probably says to play a clip in session, click on arrow, but obviously not in the part of the manual where I needed that to be said.

Its something that happens when trying to learn software. Now, of course I new right from the start what that arrow next to a clip does in session view. However, my brain didn't connect that function with working in clip view. I expected something in the way my other daws work in that respect

Ok, when you launch the clip, all clips launch??? BOTTOM RIGHT HAND OF THE CLIP BOX, a square that when you hover over it should say stop all clips... HIT THAT... now when you press the play button on the clip it will play just that clip...

The best part about Ableton is the workflow...if you are down in the clip editor that appears on the bottom of the screen when you highlight the clip, you are missing the best part of Ableton...

Look to the top of your screen to where the clips are... You just press play on the clip that you want to play...to open a new clip, you just double click on an open slot of that audio or midi track, to get it to stop you press the stop button down below the clip slots... easy does it...

Good LUCK! Hope this helps...remember all experts were noobs at one point in time...

Thanks.

What happened is that I thought the speaker icon, the icon you get when hovering the cursor over the bottom half an audio clip in clip view, would obviously play only the clip. It doesn't. It triggers all selected clips in the session view. Its basically doing the same thing as pressing the space bar or hitting the play button up on the transport.

I hadn't realized that I'd have to use the arrow button next to the audio clip selected in session view. This was counter-intuitive to how my other daws behave.

I thought that a speaker icon over an audio clip in some kind of inspector, editor, whatever, would actually play that clip...alone! DOH!

Are we straight now? :)

Assuming you have nothing in arrangement view, which would complicate things even more for this situation, when you press the little play icon of a clip in session view, all other clips in the other tracks that have the little right-arrow/triangle shaped play button lit up will also play.

To play ONLY the clip you clicked on you have to first...
press the Stop Clips icon next to the master volume slider. You'll see that all the triangular Clip Launch Buttons will turn grey.
