My recording needs are pretty simple - just being a solo acoustic guitar. I have been using Live's compressor, equalizer, etc. plus some free VST plugins. Outcome has been pretty good.
I know Live is not meant to be the end all for mastering software but it is pretty good. I would like to see Ableton add a native noise removal feature and a waveform analyser/optimizer feature and keep their sound mastering and effect features they currently have top notch. I would be great to not have to resort to another program for mastering, at least in simpler recording situations.

Elemental Audio's free Inspector is a really good tool:

In addition, I use PSP's VintageWarmer as a brick limiter/compressor. Compared with L2/L4 the price is right, and you could get even 'tube warm' compression sounds in case you like to warm up the sound.

That and Live's eq plugin makes mastering quite doable with Ableton Live.

I've been a Waves man for a while, but recently discovered PSP vintage warmer and it sounds gorgeous - highly recommend it

you dont need to use other programs than live, but you do need other plug-ins
