M-Audio Oxygen-49 is Teh Shizz Yo !!!!!!1!!11!!one

EDIT: Now that I've changed the thread title to something that might get me shot on here, would someone please kindly answer my question?

I'm slowly adding hardware to my arsenal and I'm looking at an Oxygen-49 as my next piece of gear. I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to knowing about controllers so I was wondering if someone could check something for me. Basically I'm buying the 49 because I wanted something versatile, it has 8 knobs which works out perfectly with device racks. What I wasn't sure about is if those 8 knobs could control more than one device rack depending on which one is selected, and also if it's possible to select different racks in a chain using midi keys or the buttons on the controller.

I was also wondering if there is a 25 key equivalent which also has 8 knobs and some faders. Maybe something like the Axiom 25 but with faders instead of drumpads?

Also, does the axiom-25 work well for dj-ing with live? Do any owner find that it doesn't have enough controls for the task?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.

I'm also curious about whether the axiom's 8 knobs are "smart" mapped to ableton's device rack macros.

bump.

I think Live supports that keyboard as a control surface natively. That will certainly mean the 8 knobs will auto assign to selected racks. Not sure if you'll have a way to select different devices.

Incidentally even if controllers don't have built in support in live you can set up custom scripts to assign MIDI controllers to macro controls. Some info to start with here: http://createdigitalmusic.com/2009/07/2 ... s-control/

Thanks for the response. I realized that devices could be selected with the computer keyboard, just wasn't sure about the knobs/macros.

In regards to the 1st gen Axiom, once you have set it up using the lessons in Live, then yes, the encoders are "smart" mapped to device racks but in a DUMB way. The Axiom thinks that encoder 1 is the BOTTOM left knob where as Lives treats its No.1 encoders as the TOP left knob. This means that technically 1 matches 1, 2 matches 2 etc, but practically and importantly visually the knobs on the Axiom DO NOT map to Lives encoders on your screen. They do not match. I don't know about the Oxygen but I'd bet its the same. Its been like this since version V6 and I would love to hear some rational behind why the Abe's continue to not do something about this.

Apparently you can use Enigma (on a Mac) to edit this on the Axioms end but I have not found a tutorial anywhere on how this can be done. You can't, at least when I last looked, use Enigma on a PC to make the same changes. Maybe they have fixed this since.

I don't know what Directlink offers on the Axiom in regards to Mixer and Instrument modes with respect to mapping to and controlling Live. Would be interested to hear.

In terms of selecting different devices, I am not aware of a simple fix to use features on the controller to switch between devices. I just use the comp kb's left and right arrows. The encoders stay mapped to the chosen device as noted above.

Of course you can use the MIDI map mode and manually map the encoders yourself. Defeats the purpose of instant mapping support though.

Gen 2: Shift/Patch up/Patch down = Select next or previous device..

So Shift would be the button marked 1 under the LCD?

Also, do you know if the encoders on the Axiom match the device knobs in Live? I see that the Gen 2 Axiom has No.1 encoder as top left now.

Thanks.

Yes, 1 is shift

The encoders are actually mapped better than I thought they would be.

I just got it and think it's a good buy. Unfortunately Live did not include the Control Surface Lesson for it,
so I've been waddling around trying to figure out what is what..
Good luck.
