Afternoon all,

First posting here... really useful forum and loads of good info.

I have a question/request regarding programming Bass lines for chilled breaks/Drum&Bass and Broken Beat etc..... an area of production that I've started to get interested in recently.

Previously I've messed around with house/tech house tracks where I've programmed a root/3rd and 5th note bass line usually on and around the off beat.

What's everyone's thoughts on how this should be programmed for the styles above? Is it any different?

I've started using more 'drones' and longer notes but just wondered on peoples thoughts about the placing of these notes??

Can't seem to find any specific bass line programming (note placement rather than actual sound design) tutorials for these styles.

That's probably because music is not meant to be formulaic. There is no right/wrong for that sound.

Try outlining notes from the chord you are using. Try some jazz theory here-- 7th chords, 9th chords, 13ths, etc, will sound great through a pad, and give you a nice pallette of notes to make a b-line from. Just remember to keep it simple and flowing.

The fact it's not meant to be formulaic, doesn't mean it isn't - i.e. wobble bass in dubstep, the 'b' version of the drum and bass bassline (i.e. the Roni Size inspired acoustic bass sound), TB303s for Acid House etc.

Although I totally agree with you that you should look within yourself to try and do something that is at least PARTIALLY original.

Thanks for the feedback. Definitely prefer programming the chord progression first, then bass line, at the moment...... have started to look at 7th ... but haven't made the leap to 9th just yet! Good point about the better choice of notes :->

Whilst I'm trying not to sound 'formulaic' or copy anyone, I'm decided to learn and understand the 'rules' and theory first before trying to develop my own style.
