I'm looking for a way to automate the tracking so i can trigger a clip or set of clips to start at one of 16 points in the clip depending on which pad i trigger, so while the clips playing i could skip to different parts of the clip, then land back on one when it loops. I'm thinking it could add quiite a to a beat but i cant seem to find a way to do it. Any thoughts?

Just to clarify I'm looking for something like what the beat repeat does but with more control. I was thinking one could cut up a set of clips into 16 pieces, lower or eliminate the project quantization and trigger them that way, but that seems quite tedious for an effect that can only be applied to one set of clips. 1st thing coming to my mind, is the makers previous/next buttons (arrangement view) assigned to a MIDI cc and the proper value to Global Time Quantization.

Word! much closer than what i was trying. sometimes i forget about arrangement view. i know someone out there has the perfect answer though, any more ideas?

well, it would be tedious, but if you cut the clips into 16 pieces and organized them in successive scenes with follow actions from one to the next, then you could trigger any of them and the loop would continue from that point. To get back to '1' you would have to explicitly launch the '1' clip on the downbeat ...

Yes, the follow actions work pretty nicely for this and it's not that painful to set up either IMO. You can also set the clips to always have a 1/16 quantization regardless of the global quantization.

edit: to get back on rhythm easily you could also have one additional clip that contains the entire loop which is set to 1/1 quantization

^^ Thats what I do - Have the "master" full clip assigned to 1 bar quantization and the sub-clips (cut-ups) to 16ths.
You do have to assign everything manually, tho.

this is basically what you want to do, but you would need to additionally assign each of the clips to a button on your controler.

A nifty trick that I've done before is, have markers in Arrangement View. Then assign those to MIDI. You can be pretty meticulous. The other thing you'd want to assign is some kind of control of the global quantization.

The fun part of this is that you can jump around, but the negative is that it jumps EVERYTHING around (including the Session clips). If these triggers are at the beginning, it will reset them to different points. Something like that. Fun to play around with.. until you realize its limitations

perfect! ^ was saying if you automate some markers in arrangement view, you can jump between them which will chop up whatever is in the arrangement view but it will also jump between points in the session view- if you loop four bars of markers in the arrangement view, you can effectively jump around any clip or series of clips easily and in quantized time depending on what degree of quantization your use. Wicked cool! all my beats now have a totally new dimension of playability-
