how are you guys handling the weight of these laptops, I mean I understand that they are very powerful and working out well for you, but again, what about the weight.

do you guys have desktop studios also, and if so what is the need for comparable power when you are away from the studio. I'm having trouble
deciding between something very light like 2-3 pounds, or one of those like you guys have but those sonys and toshibas are like 7-9 pounds, anyway how are you guys dealing with this. If i didn't have a desktop already I wouldn't hesitate to get one, but I used to have a 5 pound Dell laptop along time ago and that thing was murder on my shoulders, add a controller and soundcard to that and you guys see my perdicament.

thank you for your insights.

Get a Titanium PowerBook -- it is a best of breed as far as product design goes.

Why get bogged down with an ugly, heavy Wintel laptop? You could go with a Sony VAIO but then you sacrifice a lot of power and connectivity for shaving off a ton of weight.

i have a tibook and it's super keen. not heavy at all, and as the regulars of this forum have no doubt heard me say; i loves me my tibook. i loves it. don't get me wrong, it's puny little 400 mhz, limp-wristed, artsy-fartsy girly-man g4 processor can't even dream of comparing to some screamin' 6 ghz pentium 12 (or whatever they're up to) monster pc laptop, but it looks so much cooler...and lets be honest, image is everything. i have to fight off the ladies every time i bust out with it. so if you have some sort of performance fetish and that's all you care about, well, i guess you need a pc. but if you really don't care about whether or not you can make a halfway decent tune on you're laptop, you just wanna look stylin' and money is no object...then it's time to switch.

Dirty I have to admit that was some add you just wrote for the tibook, I was trying to figure out how to get the money through the computer to you while I was reading it  as much as I wish this was a simple issue, it is not, I have to strike a balance between interface and power, but I just might end up with a tibook, none of these folks with thier sonys and toshibas and other pc's are intrested in chiming in. I'd love to know how they are dealing with those 7-9 pound laptops

That's right, Mac users only care about looks!

(Never mind that a TiBook provides a powered Firewire port, wireless built-in, 15.2" screen, LED-ed power supply and battery, 32 MB graphics card, DVI output, etc. etc. etc. all in a package around 5 lbs in weight.)

That's right, we're all only about the aestethics! We pay extra just to look good!

I just bought a VAIO and was sad to see it only goes up to 1024x768 resolution :( Can't fit many tracks on the screen!!!

If money is an option I would opt for more power over a lightweight laptop. IMO Stay away from those Dell's if you don't have a pro sound card. The power supply generates a nasty hum unless you take out the ground which just sounds aweful live. I've had 2 dell inspirons and wouldn't use them live ever again. (Almost blew the speakers ata club when a dj bumped my audio cable and no ground...BOOM).

If money isn't an option get a MAC-top cause those books cook!

They're all light!!

If you think 7 pounds is too much to carry to a gig, then try lugging some 24" kick drums and 50 pound guitar amps and bass amps. I'm a drummer, and have carried tons of heavy ass sh*t hundreds of times to gigs. A 7 pound laptop ain't sh*t. Be happy you're a computer geek and not a bass player or something.

Yeah, I can back him up on this one. Carrying a 70 pound cabinet, a 20 pound amp, and a bass case into the club is a bit more work than carrying in a laptop bag and some cables. It's a drag to break all that stuff down at drunk-thirty, too!

Yeah! Fun topic.

I carried my old Kurzweil K2000 to the post office when selling it last June. 26 Kg's, whatever that makes in punds (why do you keep using punds?? *) And oh, this day it was heavy rain so I had to run with it a few hundred meters.

I have never thought about this issue at all. 2-3 Kg's - who cares?
I carry my job-laptop to home and back several days a week. No problem at all. And that is 15 minutes of walking.

MM

* Reading myself tired on PC vs. Mac I am trying to start a Kg vs. Pound war. ;)

I agree with all of you about gigs and such, I'm was talking about everyday carrying around. I'm the type that likes to make music when ever and where ever the mood strikes so I would have it with me 24-7 when I'm out side of the house, and would also carry a controller, mic, minisc, and soundcard. I've had laptops before and they were only 5 pounds but got quite heavy after extended periods of time. Of course at that time I did not have a car and was on the bus, and now I do have a car so it might make a difference. I'm just imagining 7/9 pound laptops that have all the great power, and built in drives but that must be leaving the sidewalks littered with peoples arms and shoulders.

macies,

all you ever talk about is "look at my tibook, ain't i cool behind it?"...
how many tracks do you run on that ship? how many and which vst fx?
how often do you have to wait until some 3rd party geek finally comes up with your long awaited "galvanized" super-plugs? when's apples high-tech-audio-engine really gonna work without them hassles? what happened to the jaguar? s'he afraid of the dark, or why that glooming logo?
whuzzup?
