Help- I CAN NOT warp!

Hi all.

Completely new at Live, wanting to use it to DJ. Been using vinyl and CDJs for over 10 years, but (after weeks) can't put the simplest of mixes together as can't get the hang of warping- songs always go out of time.

Steps I'm following are:

1) Create warp marker at first downbeat
2) Right click, select "Set as 1.1.1"
3) Right click, select "warp fron here, straight"
4) Delete any other warp markers
5) Highlight marker at downbeat and adjust BPM to a whole number in warping section
6) Listen to song slowly creep out of time to metronome
7) Swear at PC

I know for sure that the songs I'm using are a constant tempo, and it's happening with every one I attempt to warp.

Any tips? I'm obviously doing something wrong- can anyone suggest what it might be?

Thanks in advance.

Paul

PS- using Live v8.0.4, if that makes any difference.

instead of doing 5), adjust the markers on the beats following your first downbeat. adjust f.e. beat 4, beat 16, then beat 32 (WITHOUT creating a warp marker btw!). then go on to the first beat after a break, adjust it to fit to the grid (mostly around beat 96 or so). then move to the last 4 beats of the track, and correct the first of those 4 ones (the one on the .1, not .2, .3, .4. you ask why? because there might be some swing or groove on the non-main beats).

it might even result in a full number in the BPM box, but that way, it's fitting to the beatgrid till the last beat.

i do this successfully with lots of tracks, it's some 30 secs per track maximum.

tracks with no constant tempo, i do the same, except of actually creating warp markers as needed at the points where i correct.

Dave Permen's tip is a good one - try that one out. You might also try unwarping a track, playing it, and tapping in the tempo, to make sure you're getting it precisely.

In the mean time, I'd also recommend upgrading to Live 8.2 - it's a free upgrade, with some new sounds and bug fixes.

Hey- thanks both for the (extremely beginner's) tips. Much appreciated.

I have since found this tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxlrL8YYsvk which I found much more accessable and useful than all the others I have viewed put together.

Hopefully this can help others with the same problem.

Now...I have the basics. Onwards and upwards!

Thanks again.
