Velocity control for chain selection for effect racks

Post by samples » Fri Oct 08, 2010 8:09 pm

Does anyone know if you can use velocity to control which chain is selected on an audio rack?

I'm running dummy clips for a beat repeat effect and it would be sweet if I could have a button that was 1/16th rate with soft velocity and 1/32nd rate for high velocity. I know you can do this in the sampler, but i kinda want buttons that trigger audio/dummy clips that also use velocity to control something else
thanks

Not by default.

An audio effect rack only has a chain select zone, not a key or velocity zone. An audio effect (rack) only processes audio data and as such can't have any knowledge about stuff like velocity.

There are 2 solutions for this problem; use an instrument rack instead of an effect rack. That will be able to filter out certain velocity regions (through use of the velocity zone).

Another option could be a Max for Live device.
With kind regards,

Peter

I've looked into your question again (I'm always intrigued with situations which are somewhat unfamiliar to me) and quite frankly I now think an instrument rack is most likely not so feasible for you.

Because well... I can imagine that if you use a midi track with an instrument on it the last you need is having to maintain 50 copies of that same instrument (the situation you'd be in with an instrument rack). I cannot rule out the possibility that I overlooked something, but since every chain on an instrument rack would need a new copy of your instrument (or vst or such)....

So right now I think the only way to make this possible is using Max for Live.

Dunno if you have Max for Live but I sorta, kinda, went ahead of myself and made the patch anyway

'tis a M4L midi effect. Pull it into a midi track which has the rack you wish to control and hit the 'find audio effect rack' button. It checks the track its on for any audio effect racks and will use the first it finds (and only the first).

After that you hit a note and it will set the effect racks chain selector to the detected velocity. Something to keep in mind; normally 2 velocity values get send; the one you hit and a 0 afterward. However this patch will ignore the 0.

I hope you, or someone else, has fun with this ;-)

So far my "score" is reaching chain 89 using my Casio keyboard (I am a bit careful with this critter since I really like it) and an easy 105 with my MPD ;-)

Hi,
I'm really interested in this device but I'm a Max for Live beginner and I'm having trouble getting it working in Max4Live 7 and Live 9. Should it work in these newer versions of the software? How do I create the midi device from the code?
Thanks
