Curve from one value to another, triggered via CC

Hi all,
Just a quick question
I can map a key on my controller to something like transpose on a clip, and have pressing that key set transpose to a given value..no worries, but any idea how I can get it to tween from current value to target value, rather than in one jump? i.e. it moves there at a rate I specify? e.g. go from -8 to -20 in steps of 0.5, that kind of thing..
The thing to note here is I have to map to a key, not a knob! Ideas welcome. I'm sure some kind of automation env or similar is possible.
ps. I need to do this in real time, live performance in session view. Also I googled some more and wow there are some threads about automation curves, blimey.
