Velocity sounds like angry monkey attacking piano!!

Hi,
I run Live 7 on Windows XP.
We used an inexpensive Yamaha keyboard to record midi on a track.
The keyboard has velocity control and we believe the keyboard had the velocity control turned on when we recorded.
When played back through any VST instrument however (mainly using piano VSTs), it sounds like the keys are being pounded at full velocity by an angry monkey.
I have turned velocity all the way down on the Ableton midi controller section. (adjusted both on and off settings)
I have tried the “velocity” plug in.
No success. It still sounds like the keys are being pounded.
This is a very tender piano piece, (Like a Kleenex commercial) and so we need some softness and tenderness in approach.
Is there anything we can do?
