Suddenly lost my ASIO outputs and VST scanning problem

Suddenly today Live is not working.
Symptoms: When I add a VI to a track, it will play the first note I play and then nothing else (happens with all plugins whether Ableton or NI or anything else). In Preferences, I no longer have any options for the Outputs in the dropdown. I use the Delta ASIO drivers and sometimes ASIO4ALL. Does not make a difference which one I select, I have the same issue. When Ableton launches, it launches way too fast (seems to skip scanning the VST's -- but once launched, my VST's are there on the left.
What I've tried: Updating to 8.2.1. Deleting and recreating preferences file. Checking soundcard config in Windows and everything seems fine. Cursing. Praying. Bargaining. Pleading. Petulance. None of these seem to help.
I use Delta 44 card with breakout box on a 3 Ghz desktop PC running Win 7 64 bit with 8 Mg RAM, I also use Pro Tools 8 M-Powered (LIve and Pro Tools have happily co-existed up until now). I can't think of one specific thing I have changed that could have screwed things up as I use Live inconsistently.
Any insights from you good people would be appreciated.
Andy.
