Hi there, been lurking for a while and got some good advice off everyone already (that how to warp a track thing saved my sanity) but this is my first post here so be gentle...

I'm currently playing around with using Ableton for DJing having used it for production for a while now and I really like it for the instant syncing of tracks and the ability to mash a load of sounds and effects and accapellas and such all together but I've got one query which I'm having trouble with.

If I was to DJ out with Ableton I'd like to do what I do with vinyl and be jumping around with tempos to a certain extent, playing a few hip hop tracks, some old school funk and them moving into breaks and possibly drum n bass. Thing is, with the traditional two decks and mixer set up its easy to do a slow down or spin back or even just fade down a slower track and bring a much faster tune in pretty easily with a quick jump of tempos.

So far I can't really see an easy way of doing this and having pretty much all my tunes of all tempos warped for ease of mashing up with tunes of similar tempo. As far as I can see, I have to have one of the tracks I'm seguing without warp markers and then bring the master bpm down during this tune or mix the two together and then up the tempo which I think would sound really weird suddenly slowing down or speeding up a track so much.

Anyone any advice, work arounds for this problem. Anyone else had the same problem?

I use an Eyris to control it but you can use any midi-capable controller.

All the parameters in Supatrigga can be midi learned. The Eyris is a midi device that uses a blue beam (like a Roland D-Beam) to send midi messages. As you move your hand around, it controls the parameter you've assigned it to in Live, such as a Supatrigga paramter. This can be anything such as Reverse or Slowdown. Another method would be to put Supatrigga on Send 1 and assign the Eyris to an Audio Track's Send knob and by moving your hand you adjust the amount of effect on top of the original track. Or you can simply drop Supatrigga as an Insert effect on an Audio Track and use the Eyris to enable/disable Supatrigga at any given moment.

Another alternative that I've done live a few times is to plug the midi out of the Eyris to the midi in of a Korg Kaoss Pad 2. You can use one hand over the Eyris to control the amount of Kaoss being applied to an audio signal, and use the other hand (finger) on the Kaoss Pad to control the variable of the particular parameter. The two make an awesome blend of components and the crowd loves it. It's refreshing when people see new ways of mixing and manipulating a live DJ set, especially when it's all happening on a Laptop and a couple small devices.

I think you mean mash-up DJing as opposed to spinning down the decks right?

There is a way in the Clip view: On the far right hand column (above the master fader) choose an empty horizontal row and press CTRL+E (or Apple+E on Mac) ... rename the row with the bpm of the track you'd like to play. Say you are currently playing breaks at 130, but want to cut to a hip-hop track at 90... just rename an empty row "90bpm" ... The little triangle launch/play icon will turn orange. Drop in the hip-hop track you want to play on any channel (along that row) and when ready, press the orange triangle. Not only with the clip launch, the bpm of Live will change at the same time.

Hard to clearly explain in words, but really very easy. It certainly takes less time to do that it does to write down!

someone posted about a feature that would automatically change tempos if one of the master clip columns was labeled with the target tempo (e.g. 90 bpm). is this clip view tempo change feature only in version4x? cause im using 3 and i cant get it to work

Yeah - this feature is version 4 only.
