I just downloaded the demo, and I really like what I see so far, but I'm having trouble recording bass guitar to be used in the program. I'm a totally newbie at this, so I'm sure it's something simple that I'm missing.

I've got my bass plugged into the 550 watt head from my bass amp, which in turn is plugged in from the 'speaker out' jack on the head to the 'line in' jack on my computer. I know the signal is getting through, because as soon as I do that, I can play right through my computer speakers as though they were an amp.

The problem is, I can't get Live to 'hear' the bass. I know how to arm a track and use the monitor and start recording; it just won't acknowledge the bass. I have another program (Total Recorder) that 'listens' analog-ly, so it's not like nothing on my computer can get to the bass.

I've played with all of the input preference settings and I still can't get anywhere. I've checked some of this board and some FAQs, but they seem mostly dedicated to DJ'ing and electronic sounds.

Is there something simple I am missing? Thanks in advance for any help.

Not sure about this, but I don't think you can record into the demo version.

make sure it's a "line out" from your amp not a "speaker out"...

i'm sure that can't be good to send a signal designed for a bass cabinet into a 'line in'.

You're probably right for safety and sound quality - but it should still pick up SOMETHING, no? I'm also using just a regular guitar as well as bass.

I'm pretty sure wildcon is correct--I don't recall being able to record in the demo, and other people who have used the demo have commented on this. Rest assured, though, you can record very easily into the full version. I do it all the time. (I used the demo just long enough to decide that Live was a program I really wanted to use.)

Good question. I use my PowerBook G4's built-in audio in (no USB--instead, straight into the line in using an external preamp), and I calibrated latency at 3 ms. You'll never get rid of latency, but 3 ms is so small that I can live with it easily. YMMV, of course, but that's what I measured on a 20021 GHz G4 with 1 GB RAM.

my latency is 3 ms too but its still feelable.. and i dont like that..but options that live opens are really ql

Really? 3ms is really short, so I'd think if you're detecting it, maybe there's some other issue dragging you down somewhere. You might want to check your processor load, the number and kind of plugins, or routing to see if there isn't some other issue at work here. (See http://www.ffliquid.com/latency.html for an interesting take on short latencies.) Or maybe you're working with extremely fast tempi or something, where it does become apparent.

In any case, I do agree that Live's possibilities are quite cool.

Checking my settings, input latency of 3ms, output of 3ms (112 samples) for a total of 6ms at 44100 sample rate.

I was trying out Jesusonic yesterday, and that has some huge latency going on, much more so than Live.

Don't know if I understand you here. I'm using whatever drivers are the default for audio input/output in Mac OS X (10.3).
