Psytrance Production In South Africa

THIS IS QUITE LONG SO BEAR WITH ME!!!

I've been a user of Ableton Live 6 since early 2006 and since have been building my skills continiously over the years. Up untill early 2010, Iv'e been primarily making chillout beat type of stuff since if only used Ableton's standard effects and instruments to create music. :|

That's when I finally got my finger out of you know what and started looking at apps. to used with Ableton. To be honest, the fist time I heard of VST's and VSTI's I was completely baffled. What the hell where these things and how do you use them? 8O

After aqcuiring some simple vst's, I was blown away. Stuck behind a screen for hours on end downloading VST's and VSTI's from all makers and types. After experimenting with them and made some prototype mixes for the future, I eventually found the best out of hundreds that I found and used them prodominately ever since.

All this effort was due to my extreme love for Psycadelic Trance. And being fortunate living here in South Afrca (Cape Town) where the Psytrance scene is the best in the world, I fell in love with it ever since and as a result, my producing has found a genre to fit into.

But through my meeting of DJ's and Producers alike, I found that most, if not all Psytrance producers use Cubase. Mistified as to why this is, I found some relative points concerning the producing of proper Psytrance.

But although most producers use Cubase, I gotten to learn Ableton over the years and find it difficult to transfer over to Cubase witch brings be to my question.

If I can get input by producers and DJ's alike as to what their oppinion is concerning the production of Psytrance, what is the prefered sequencer etc.

Would appreciate any non-sarcastic input.

Why on earth would the choice of DAW be relevant to the genre of music you're creating? What do you think it is that is so essential for psy tarnce that you can do in cubase but not in Live?

Yes, producing Psytrance requires the best tools. We all know that Live can't deliver the sonic that is essential to the genre.
I think Live's audio engine is the problem. Just doesn't sound psychedelic enough. Cubase certainly delivers that.

It made me laugh, and it's probably quite a bit more sarcastic than you were looking for, but the points ollyb303 and 2be are making are true: tying a DAW to a genre just doesn't make sense. For a start, you're talking about using lots of VSTs and they'll run exactly the same in pretty much any DAW that supports them - be it cubase, Live, reaper, pro tools or anything else.

Seems to me, all you need to do is find out more about the "rules" of psytrance - what makes a song fit into that particular genre - and just apply what you know about producing in Live to that. Learning a different DAW seems like a completely different exercise altogether and won't get you to making good psytrance any faster at all.

Speaking as a reformed psy-tarncer :-), I'd suggest that the reason most psy-trance producers use Cubase, is that it's been around for longer than Live (a lot of psy-trance producers have been at it for a long time now), and it is easy to get a cracked copy. It's become a self-perpetuating trend in that everyone wants to use what their favourite producers use.

But in reality (yeah - I know, reality is an illusion duuude ;-), as Mr Olly says, it genuinely does not matter in the least what software you use. Unless you're trying to use Word to make a beat or something. Then you've got problems.

The most important thing is to use software you're comfortable with. If you switch software because someone told you that "Cubase sounds better" (which is total rubbish, btw), you'll find yourself lost and confused in an unfamiliar environment, and it'll take ages before you get your creative flow back. By which time, you'll probably want to go back to Live.

IMO, all you need to make psy-trance is Live, u-he Zebra2, and a bunch of Terrence McKenna samples.

+1 on the u-he Zebra.

There are tons of videos on youtube on how to utilize that vst for psytrance. Also, I'd look into some of Tom Cosm's vids. He seems to dabble in a bit of everything :)

hehe, listen:
it really doesnt matter which program you use for doing psyttrance or whatever.
i can say over last 15 years i produced psytrance first in cubase (cause i didnt had a mac than), than i switched to mac and also switched to logic, but for a long time i use ableton and its awesome and the best innovating software on the market... the last album i made, "braincell - intelligent being" was completely made in ableton live suite 8 and i think it was the best decision to make it there......soooooo fantastic program...
so just learn your program you use and you can do any kind of music that you want to....
