I just made six versions of that keyboard solo and I want to edit them together into a master 'take'.

MAN that's a giant pain using Ableton!!! ....think maybe you guys could do something about that? It's a pretty darn common task for an audio producer. I'm super tired of bouncing down and importing to Logic every time I have an instrumentalist over to add a layer to my Ableton song.

I completely feel your pain. It should work with both MIDI and AUDIO. It could work like this for example: add a "monophonic/polyphonic" mode -button to the current group tracks.

Polyphonic mode is what they are now: all the tracks sound at the same time.
Monophonic mode would make the group-track what you're asking for: selection areas appear inside the track and only one track sounds at a time, based on your selections/xfades.

This is pretty much the main feature that still has me looking at other daws sometimes. I don't want to switch to anything else though. I really hope this comes in Live 9.
