Can you not just click where you want to paste to get the vertical marker and then paste?

that's what i've always thought but it pastes somewhere else. I don't understand the logic

When you copy, it also copies any empty space you have selected. So make sure you select only what you want to paste! Your other option is compensating for empty space by adjusting the location where you're pasting... No tricks, it pastes what you're selected.

after you've done the selection, check the yellow line at the top of the piano roll to see the timespan of the actual selection that Live will copy when you do CMD-C. Sometimes it quantizes the selection to the preceding or following grid lines, depending on how exactly you select the notes. When you paste, simply click on the grid line where the copied selection should be placed. I've found Live to be very accurate and predictable when it comes to copying and pasting MIDI events, in fact I find it much easier to work with in this regard than the piano roll in Logic, because Logic always pastes beginning with the leading edge of the first note copied, whereas Live gives you the possibility to copy leading space before the first note so that the grid offsets are properly preserved.

What version of Live are you using ?
Older versions had a terrible paste cursor implementation.

yep, it all changed in version 8
previous to that there was no real "paste here", it was insane, as I'm sure you well know.
In V8 they put a whole new cursor, selection and brace system in.
