I am not a programmer... and I guess I need help getting going on this.

The program does not appear to have a "read me" file of any kind. I'm not a beginner to Live, but Max is new for me.

Would love to just get to start playing with cool new effects / instruments and presets

Thanks!

Max/M4L has complete documentation + tutorials built into the program. Check out the options under the Help menu in the toolbar to open up the Max Help window.

If all you want to do is start "playing" with pre-made effects, those are in your Live library under "Max Instruments/MIDI Effects/Audio Effects."

I'd recommend the work of Mike Chenetz over at max4live.info his videos are what got me started in M4L when i first got it...

+1 for Mike Chetez at M4L.info and the built in tutorials.

With all of that you should be on your way in no time.

Best advice from me, start on paper with an idea of what you want to do, be it a new way to control Live or an audio effect.... Then work out all of the functionality you want to be able to do and then research the objects that can do it, i press alt and click on a max object to bring up the help and then often go for the detailed help which often has links at the bottom to other objects that do similar things!

ps i've not done a single tutorial as my learning style is to do things first, Max works with all of the different learning styles, if you like to observe others i'd recommend downloading a few devices from max4live.com and seeing how others solve problems although the best examples are the M4l.api examples (go to extras menu and you'll find them there, they're fully commented and can be adjusted to your needs)
