So I set my VST folder to my C: Drive because I'm a numpty and everytime I start up Live 8.2 it freezes as it's trying to scan the whole computer.
Is there anyway I can reset the folder to default so that it stops?
Cheers

i had the same thing happen. nasty isnt it. it just never starts. i found the folders containing the .cfg that i got from another forum users advice. i ended up deleting the folder but that erased my authorisation. so ended installing the whole lot again including old versions as i have the upgrade package. took a while! ableton only allow a limited number of authorisations so dont over do it.
best go to ableton tech support even though i didnt as i was rushing it and my problem occured on a weekend. they may have an efficient way of resetting your .cfg plugins file.

So you set your VST folder (from Live's preferences) to just C:\ and not just a folder in C:\ like I have?
I put all my VSTs in C:\VstPlugins\ to avoid problems with VSTs that don't like being in C:\ProgramFiles....
In Win7 you can look in c:/users/yourusername/appdata/roaming/ableton/Livex.xx/Preferences
You will find a file called Preferences.cfg. Rename it something like Preferences.cf_ so Live can't find it anymore. Next time you start Live it should make you a new one.
I'm not sure it this will work but it seems to be a good way of manually resetting everything.
By the way, appdata is a hidden folder on most people's computers so you will probably have to...
Launch Explorer.
Select Tools/Folder Options/View.
Check "Show hidden files and folders."

Yeh, I'd set it literally just to the C:/ Drive, not a folder within it.
I just followed dentaku's method, attempting actually to just edit the cfg file and change the VST destination within it, which i thought i'd done however on lauch it said that there was an error with the file.
But it simply created a new one so loaded up fine (with everything reset of course)
Thanks for all the help everyone.
Advice to anyone, don't try this at home...

It's good to know it works.
It's also great when you give someone advice and they know enough about computers to be able to follow it
