Greetings Experts,

I am setting up a new machine with LIVE Suite 8.2 in Win 7, i5 2.53ghz, 4GB, and a Tascam us-144mkII interface w/ASIO4ALL.

I have done lots of Win7 tweeks, disabled all devices that can be disabled, and am using the DPC Latency Checker tool to measure latency spikes which are now all down in the green but still not low, average @ 450 us, but no crackles or pops in the audio.

My latency reading in PREF's is 5.4 ms. however when playing virtual instruments, the midi lag between attack of the controller and response of the note is (guessing here) about 25 ms.

Same controller, same interface on the iMac i3 3.0 ghz, no problems. Same controller on another setup in tweeked XP and a cardbus Emu 1616m yields no problems.

love my new rig! but cannot use it unless i can find and resolve this midi lag.

many, many things.

there's two types of midi drivers that you can select in the preferences. mme and direct. the modern one is to use the direct driver as this carries full time stamping and generally yields better results in modern os's. it could be you have the wrong driver selected. also. ... there is a track delay in each track. though unlikely its best to check thats set to zero in your vsti/midi track.

is your 5.4 ms overall latency or input latency? input latency is not affected in vsti use as the pc does not bring it in but produces the audio. output latency is what should be examined. a good midi driver will come in to the pc in <1ms. so the overall latency for a vsti will be the midi latency plus the output latency. the vsti might be causing you problems if its taking more than the output latency time. but generally they dont.

Thank you Pugface, this is mysterious, i think the problem is actually audio latency, i have never encountered anything like this before - but i did switch to the midi direct drivers so thanks for the tip
