Korg Nanopad XY control is constrained to a diagonal line
Korg Nanopad XY control is constrained to a diagonal line
Hi everyone. First of all, I am a newby to this. I've had a demo copy of Ableton Live Intro for a few days. I know I've just barely scratched the surface, but I am really impressed with how easy it is to use and how powerful it is. The ability to mix and match clips on the fly is very cool.
However, I am having a problem with mapping the XY controller on my Korg Nanopad to the flanger. I searched this forum and found a description of how to do it - run a finger across the appropriate axis and then use undo to remove the Z-value caused by removing your finger from the pad and return it to the correct high value for X or Y. I seem to have done this correctly. The Delay Time control in midi map is listed as G#1 in the Note/Control column with a Min of 0.10ms and a Max of 7.00ms, and the Feedback control is listed as A#1 with a Min of 0.00 and a Max of 0.99.
I can control the flanger with the XY control, but for some reason the movement of the control is constrained to a diagonal line that runs from the lower left corner to the upper right. I cannot move the control off of this line. Obviously this makes most of the tonal possibilities of the tool unavailable.
This constraint doesn't happen in Ableton itself, I can grab the controller with the computer trackpad and move it freely in all directions. It's only with the nanopad's XY that I have this problem.
I am using a Macbook with OS X 10.4.11. and a nanopad. The only other devices on USB are hard drives, so I doubt there is any interference. I don't have a keyboard yet, so there is no other midi hardware attached.
Any ideas what would cause this, or more to the point, how to fix it?
Thanks

Can you post a screen shot of your midi mappings?
CTRL M and open the browser as this is where they'll be listed...
Cheers

They are mapped to the same cc, so x=y for all values x. You need to set one to the other cc that is being sent out.

Is there an easy way to edit those channel assignments? Looking in Google I see references to both a Korg Editor for the nanopad (I didn't recieve any software with the controller though) as well as a way to edit midi assignments in Live using the UserConfiguration.txt file. Looking at the that file I see assignments for various pads, knobs, and sliders but it is not clear to me which entry (if any) represents the XY controller.
Sorry if I am missing something obvious. Like I said, I am completely new to this.

Press another area on the nanopad when assigning to one of parameters. It should change the cc#, if not you'll need to figure out how the nanopad sends that info and update it to send different cc's for x & y.number9 wrote:Is there an easy way to edit those channel assignments? Turn on 'hold'. Then when you rub across the bottom edge of the square, you will be sending no change from one CC, and you will be sending a lot of movement from the other CC (which Ableton will pick up). Do the same along the left edge for assigning another value. If hold is not on, both parameters bounce after touching, causing both to change at once.
If all else fails, try ctrl+z, and it should hopefully choose the Other CC.
