MIDI step recording, insert marker resets

Hey,
I'm trying to do midi step recording in the midi note editor with midi editor preview turned on.
I use the arrow keys on a qwerty keyboard to move the insert marker back and forth.
I use a midi keyboard to play the notes one step at a time.
I add notes by holding down the note on the midi keyboard and advancing the insert marker (using the right arrow on a qwerty keyboard).
The problem is that if I wait a bit after adding a note the insert marker disappears after a second or two. It doesn't stay put after the note. This makes it very painful to edit a sequence step by step as I have to navigate through the entire sequence after each note.
Why isn't the insert marker staying put? Is there a way to fix this?
The insert marker usually stays put but if I move it to the right while holding down a note, after a few seconds it disappears. Strange..
