Tap tempo still sux

I was hoping that this would be all gone in v.4.1, but it ain't. I still can't get the tap tempo to work right on my G4 Powerbook. I have it keymapped to shift+n (capital n). I don't get the huge parameter jumps anymore, but when I tap the tempo it goes 1,2,1,1,2,1,2,1,1,1,1...etc. I'm sitting trying to tap to some trance. I know that the tempo is somewhere around 130bpm. Live is giving me tempos like 83.64, 93.43, 73.06, and 101.33. WTF!!! Why can't they get this right!?

Try to adjust the key's repeat function in the powerbook's preference>mouse&keyboard.
I'm on the non-reapeat mode for the keyboard.
And I cannot recommend the shift key.
I just use "m" or "t"
Working fine overhere.
But yes, I get those WTF very rarely.
Good luck.

tch,
I think you may be on to something. I tried your fix and while I noticed some improvement, it still does not work right. I keep getting the quick flash of red like I'm doubling up on a beat and also at faster tempos (100+) I get the 1,1,1,1,2,1,2,1...etc. thing. I'm sure you can imagine how frustrating this is. Everything else works like a charm. In fact this is the only bug I've really experienced using Live so far. But I suppose it's redundant to state that this issue make Live on my laptop almost useless as a live instrument.
P.S.
If I use v.4.0.3. the tap works, PERFECTLY.

I thought that this was a latency issue, now I know that it is simply Live.

Same here with Live 4.1 on my Alu Pbook. Tap tempo assigned to a key on my Remote 25 exhibits the same 1,2,1,2 behaviour, giving false tempos on the way. Totally unusable. I've used Tap tempo a lot in versions 2 and 3 and it worked much better !

I was assuming I was doing something wrong. Still may be since I am not up tp speed with Live, but this is one of the main reasons I wanted it. I was told it could play to YOU with tap tempo. I haven't seen it work yet. This may be the thing that breaks it for me. It''s useless otherwise.
I haven't even tried it on my G4 AlumBook. I've been putting tracks together with DP/Live 4.1 on my old 450 Mac. Using the TAP on screen it exhibits the same thing. Jumping to way lower BPMs. Useless.

Hi folks,
sorry for the delayed replay. I needed some time to test. Internally we fixed a problem happens only on OS X and could be the reason why Tap Tempo could behave bad on OS X.
As the result of my testings, Tap tempo seems to work fine on Windows and on Mac OS 9, but depending on the hardware and the CPU usage badly on OS X.
So at first I need to know if there is anybody having the these problems also on Windows or OS 9?
All OS X user having this Tap Tempo problem, please do the following:
1. Be sure that Live is not running
2. Locate your Live 4.1 folder
3. Within this folder you should find the Application "Live" and 3 folders, "Factory Content", Factory Presets" and "Doc"
4. Go into "Factory Content"
5. There you should find again 3 folders, "Demo and Tutorials", "MIDI Loops by Keyfax" and "Sample Hits".
6. Rename the "Demo and Tutorials" folder to "Demo and Tutorials Test".
7. Now please start Live 4.1. Check if all the Tutorials are disabled (gray) in the "Help" menu.
8. Now try if Tap Tempo works better.
Please let me know if it makes a difference.
regards,
Alex

Alex, I use Win XP Pro, Sp1, and get this issue too. It only happens when the clip I'm playing is warped though, as soon as I click on the clip warp button to turn it off and try again, it's rock solid. Turn Warp back on, and it goes all over the place. This happen using both the mouse, and a QWERTY key set to tap.
I've seen this behavior on both my laptop, and my desktop machine, both running XP.

Hi Tarekith,
please give me more details about what exactly happens.
About what kind of clip do you talk? Does it happen independent of the length of that clip? Or better asked, how long in minutes is the clip where it happens for you?

Alex

This is mainly longer clips we're talking about in my case, complete tracks recorded from vinyl. I'd say about 6-8 minutes long on average. To be honest, I've never had a need to use tap tempo with smaller clips, so I have no idea how that affects it.
The symptoms are pretty easy to spot though, tempo jumps between extreme low and high values, and it's pretty much near to impossible to get close to the target tempo.
I wish Ableton would implement something like the averaging algorithms that some hardware manufacturers use. The more times you hit tap tempo, the more accurate it gets, as it averages not just the first 4 taps, but all taps. Just a suggestion of course.

Hi Alex,
Thanks a LOT for this one! Boy now I can get back to doing the live thing. Now, if only this next problem can get addressed I'll be in nirvana. Search out my other post below:

Some PC users reported problems. I tried your trick but the Demo and Tutorials Test isn't grayed out when I launch Live and all its files are still active.

Do you have renamed the right folder for the right Live version?
If you have a problem with Tap Tempo on WIndows please give us more details about it.
