higher latency with my USB soundcard...

I get lower latency without a soundcard... 0 ms input latency and 2.33 ms output with 45 samples, compared to with my NI Audio Kontrol 1 that gives 5 ms input latency and 6 ms output latency at 45 samples.
Is there something I'm doing wrong / don't understand? Or do I just have to do my recording without a soundcard but use it when I edit/mix (it does handle full songs a lot better than without it)? But I thought the point of a soundcard was to make things faster, including latency..
(oh and I'm on a mac w/ coreaudio)
