Hey Peoples,

I have been searching through these forums for awhile now, and have had some luck in setting up my Akai MPK49 as well as some tips & tricks in Ableton Live 8. I recently purchased a Sony VAIO, i7 6GB Windows 7 64-bit laptop that I figured would solve the problems of my 5 year old XP machine. Boy, was I wrong.

Ableton Live 8.2 has been giving me some weird problems--it doesn't correctly recognize my MPK49. The way I have been resolving this problem is by uninstalling the Akai driver, unplugging the MPK49, and allowing Windows 7 to reinstall the driver. Only then will Live recognize it. If I close out of the program and reopen it/restart the computer, Live doesn't recognize it.

I've tried combos of using the Midi IN/OUT setups, but to no avail. Is there something I'm missing here?

I've never had to install drivers for my MPK49, Win7 64bit just picked it up so I'm assuming you mean the drivers the OS uses and not something special from Akai.

Device Manager says this

Driver Provider: Microsoft
Driver Date: 7/13/2009
Driver Version: 6.1.7600.16385

The machine itself is using firmware 1.05

Is that what you're using?
Have you tried using all USB ports on the laptop?

Yep, I checked device manager and the provider/date/version is the same. The MPK is also running 1.05 firmware.

Good question! I have 2 USB 3.0 ports & a USB 2.0/SATA (the one I have been using), so that almost seemed like it would be the problem. I have actually narrowed it down to being that the MPK is not recognized after a restart, NOT after closing & reopening.


Btw-good to hear that not all of us have issue with the MPK

That's strange, usually problematic USB devices have problems coming back from sleep/hibernate and are fine with complete restarts.
I use a desktop system so it never hibernates/sleeps but I seem to remember the MPK having to be unplugged/re-plugged after a computer comes out of sleep on rare occasions. In general it's been a vey reliable machine.

Dude, I have this same crazy problem. Have you figured out any solutions?

I am glad that I am not the only person with this issue... though I hope we both can figure it out soon.

yep, me too.
works perfectly on my girlfriends computer, but on my my laptop? no dice.
recognises it though, it just won't send any midi with my laptop.

Good (unfortunately?) to see that I'm not the only person with this problem. I've tested the MPK49 with a desktop with XP as well as the windows 7 laptop with two separate cords to no avail. The XP laptop has a yellow exclamation next to the driver, and is not recognized at all on that PC, while the windows 7 mpk driver pretends to be installed correctly, yet proves that it has problems when trying to set it up.

Any gurus in the building wanna lend us some of their knowledge?

well i managed to fix mine with some bruteforcing.
uninstalled the usb audio drivers that's shipped with windows, uninstalled the mpk drivers, rebooted, reinstalled. at this point the mpk will be recognised as an usb audio device, so you'd have to uninstall that again, tehn reboot again, replug it and pray that it will recognise it as an mpk. after some repeating and after some loud swearwords and the occasional "why the fuck did i buy a pac laptop for fucks sake!?" screamage, it decided to work.

if you're running an hp laptop btw you have to make sure that hp framework service is running, i assume that this is the case for any service that's special for your brand of laptop if they are so shitty that they need a special software framework.

as it is now it works, but it needs to be unplugged and replugged upon waking up from sleep, and if you haven't unsed live for some time it seems to "forget" that the mpk sends midi so you need to unplug it and replug it otherwise live will recognise it but refuse to have midi sent to it.
this seems to be because of a service from what i gather, rather then a driver issue. but first you have to make sure to actually get the drivers to work properly which can be a pain in the ass.
