This.

ABL2 is a more faithful reproduction, Phoscyon is a bit nastier!

+ 1 on the phyoscyon. @OP are you comparing it to a 303 you have or are you more trying to get the sound you love from tracks? Processing is important but I think the sequence itself plays a bit part. Here's a track I did with a Physcon for the acid, a Roland RS7 for the strings, SH101 for the sub bass (808 samples for the drums and an impulse response from a lexicon PCM 90 for the reverb). I think the Phyosocon holds its own well against the other sounds, I particularly like the 'bark' that the sequencer accent gives, just like the 303.

http://www.x0xsource.com/ sells them pre-made.

Definitely worth it, and it DOES sound better than all of the software emulations + you get the live tweaking that really makes acid what it is.

Yeah, x0xsource is a third party company that makes them and then sells them. Pretty high quality construction too.

Oh, and here are some sound samples (apparently one of my old songs ended up on this page??? [the first video])-

Nice track.

only problem with the xox is that it dont sounds like a 303..and you cant transfer sequences from a 303 to the xox.. teh y are just to different.

thats mainly becuase they only copied the sound engine but not the sequencer features and gate timing..
and also the sound engine has the wrong power supply and circuit board design to achive the original 303 sound

the plug closest sequencer wise is the audiorealism..however the sound is quite lame..

the old phosicon 1-6 is better here.

soundwise good ol rebirth gets still closest to the 303 fun..but they has a similar sequencer as the xox..but with correct gate timing options..so its still closer.. but no fun to program..needs ages exept you do the random 1 bar all 16th possesed no style at all style..

but.. sadly the proppelerheads never made plugin/rewire versions that can be used on os x :-/

in the end only a 303 sounds like a 303

Really? I own(ed) both, and I didn't have any problems transferring sequences. What do you think is different, something in the sequencer?

And really, they do sound almost identical (keep in mind that no two 303's sound exactly the same). The parameter ranges are a little different (so 3 o'clock on the resonance may sound different on the x0x than on the 303), but you can get any 303 sound on the x0x.

Though the x0x doesn't squeal quite as much, it still squeals better than any other emulation or clone without sound too harsh.

Rebirth does sound pretty good, but not great.

You are right though - if you need it to sound exactly like a 303 (which is hardly ever needed in a full mix), get a 303. But that is getting harder with prices starting at $2000 USD, if you're lucky.
my mc 202 sounds more like a real 303 than the xox even with a total different circuit.. but similar powersupply..

the powersupply is essential pat of a synth sound.

and when you are able to transfer your sequences they are just to primitiv and dont make use of slide´s, legato and rest features of the 303.. and triplets of cause..

only primitiv sequences can be transfered to the xox.. the real funky ones dont surrive the process because the way how slides rest and accents interact is totally screwed..and that actually is the 303 sound ... more than the filter..

the xox is a xox.. no 303.. is not better or worse than any other of the failed clones out there..

pretty much the same problem we have with lots of software theese days.. the programmers are usually not qualified to really develop sequencers because they just dont know how to use them thrufully.. so they forget about important inovatios of the past and serve primitive algos in the form of brand new software..

in case of the xox the inbuild processor dont leaves much choice.. it never can have full 303 functionality and midi and copy management and realtime input and multiple bar edits and and..

some people plan to mod the xox with a bigger cpu..maybe someone can program a propper sequencer than..

and than it might be the best clone..still not sounding the same.. but at least performs the same..

in the moment the xox is by no means a propper 303 replacement..sadly :-(

i have one and would prefer to use it on stage..but pretty useless

its like when you you dont want to take your 60´s strat on stage.. but the ax from guitar hero is just not doing it.. maybe when they add some real strings it will work?

that all theese clones havent made the real 303´s a cent cheaper actually tells the whole story.

what is a bit unknown is how much that relates to the sequencer..

Well, that doesn't really mean anything since general synth prices, especially on eBay, have skyrocketed for no apparent reason except that one guy puts it up there for $4000 which makes the next guy think that he can get the same, and suddenly everybody raises their prices. I've seen it happen on eBay on numerous occasions. One example would be the relatively crappy Novation Bass Station. You used to be able to get them for $100 easy, and now they go for upwards of $400 - and I really don't think many people want them :D

the rule of capitalism is that the demand is dictating the price.. not the other way around..

and why is there still such a high demand? the clones dont work.. therfore are not good enough.. missing important aspects..

I get what you're saying on the sequencer though. I haven't really paid much attention to the slide time, though I'm not sure what you're saying is wrong with the rest on the sequencer?
go to the devilfish pages of robin whittle.. there are links to articles how the 303 sequncer is timed internally.. the xox works totally different and therfore many 303 sequences cant be played with a xox..

only the all 16th notes posessed one bar stuff translates.. and that is the most boring thing you can do with a 303.. that wasnt original anymore in 1990 allready.. a good 303 line is composed diferently..
its uselees to take a hardware with you that cant do interesting 303 lines... than you are better of with a plug.. especially when the plug can do such lines.. as the audiorealism for example...
