Ableton Forum

Ableton's ability to warp audio clips to a particular bpm and time signature is one of its most powerful features. Are there any other DAW's that use a similar warping system? I'm not aware of any. Does Ableton have patents/IP that prevent others from shipping products with similar warping engines?

almost all other DAW's have adapted something similar now ie Protools Elastic Audio. they all use different algorithms from what i've seen and ableton recently partnered w/ Elastique for the development

Logic's warping is pretty good.

I tried Cubase's warping (version 5 and 5.5, I think maybe it was overhauled in 6?) and was pretty underwhelmed, certainly so compared alongside Live's abilities -- it warps stuff quickly and easily enough, but the sound is much choppier with complex material and I even got artifacts sometimes, etc. Definitaley couldn't replace Live's abilities in that respect.

Also just to clarify I'm not talking about more complex stuff like individual warp-point moving / adding (not sure Cubase can even do that the way Live can) but rather just what the OP mentions: the ability to drag an audio-loop file from a folder into a project and have it auto-magically sync to the tempo of the project.

Doesn't Logic require you to first convert your files to "apple loops" before the tempo-sync warping works?

dont forget acid.. it had better warping years before life even showed up and still sounds and handles way better..

its defently not the warping that made life special.. thats reathe a week poiunt and sound quality killer..

the clip launch matrix is the strong point and waht still seperates life from other daw´s..


opcode studio vison had a similar thing..but more advanced.. lots of the clip launch concept in live was taken from opcodes concept..

when you just after the warping sony´s acid night be worth a look.. also strong on the multimedia side and better midi options than life... but..

I don't know if it involves apple loops in the process, but for the end user, you just have to turn on flex for a region for it to work.

haven't tried it yet but judging by the videos, the time stretching of Props' Record seems pretty amazing.

Not tried Logic for a long time, but just getting a mac and the thought of dumoping PC cubase in favour of logic on the MBP is going through my head

Nah. Maschine already provides a more than viable alternative to Live's session view. And it does everything from the dedicated controller at a level of integration that makes Live and APC blush including launching clips (even legato) and scenes as well as recording realtime automation into clips.

Single point editing for things like moving bum notes is really easy since they added flex editing. There's some youtube videos that show it pretty well if you want to get an idea of how it works. Has different modes like Live as well, for drums, solo instruments, complex, etc. Sounds pretty good to me, though I admit it's not something I really use all that often. Garageband in iLive '11 has Flex editing as well now.
