How much do people use automation in mixdowns?

Is it something to avoid or is it something used often.

In reference to EQ and maybe volume.

Thanks.

As long as it's needed.
I mean, plenty.

Yea, all the time...

NB: I often use a Utility to create volume automation such as fades, cuts etc... instead of the main volume faders: Handy if you need to pull the volume down on a track and then realise your volume slider is automated!

(Some ppl, me included, favour using volume automation instead of a compressors as you have more control. old school technique right there!! )
