Ableton 8 is very slow to load and save on my AMD hexcore (which is very powerful). Also, it keeps running at around 20% processor when doing nothing. It is munching on my resources and shouldn't be.

Unlikely. On my core2duo I run about 20% with 4 audio tracks, 6 midi tracks with drum racks or vsts and reverb on every track. Live is not to blame here...
