midi weirdness

Here's what I am experiencing:I have used midi instruments successfully (M-Audio Radium 61 Kybd controller and Akai LPD8 drum pads). So Today I get set to do some midi work and the control bar indicates midi input but the instrument shows none - except I can control parameters like volume, pitch etc. But once in a while I get a midi message through and a note plays or a drum hits. And as I am writing this, I am hearing notes I played on the kybd controller 30 minutes ago!!!!! Anybody have a clue what's going on?
