It's up to you to decide what samples match, but you can match them faster if you make a rack for quickly selecting different combinations of drum samples. It makes it easier to get good results. Basically twist a few knobs, ask yourself if it sounds good, then go on to the next combination. There was a tutorial somewhere on how to do it with sampler (shouldn't be hard to find), you can also do it with drumracks and a pitch device. I have it set up so that knobs on my controller are mapped to select different samples as well as some knobs to change chain levels for mixing. The workflow is much faster and it's way more fun.
You can also try changing things like the pitch of each sample, their levels, note length, decay, and attack of the hats.

Here's the tutorial I was talking about, if you don't have sampler you can still do it with a drum rack and a pitch device placed before it.

Clearly. Everyone knows techno is all about creating the perfect kick. To hell with the rest of the track.

I mostly use the pitch knob in my drum sampler of choice to match up sounds.
Sometimes I use snares pitched way up as hats. Hats pitched down as snares. For me kicks and snares use multiple samples/layers for their sound. I also adjust the amplitude envelopes (mostly decay or release depending) to get certain samples tighter or to only play for a certain time period of each hit.
