Had trouble with a keystation before and it would randomly lose midi connection. I tried installing drivers and such with no luck. What did fix it for me was plugging it in straight and not using a hub. As far as a replacement for the trigger finger, i say the korg padkontrol. They had the best pads besides mashine. Dont bother with the nano pad. Same with the akai mpd series. I tried those also and the pads cuz i didnt like the feel, but thats subjective

I think for the trigger finger the Korg padKontrol would be a good replacement, if you are looking for nice feeling and good responding pads. Costs more than I think trigger finger did, but it should be worth it. I tested Akai MPD & MPK pads and Korg nanoPad and all are not nearly as good as padKontrol.

For the keys I think you should go to a store and test, because the feeling of the keys and hardware in general is very different and it's a matter of taste, what you like best. The Novation keyboard have great features, but their key response is quite soft and the hardware all in all has that plastic feeling. Akai to me has a better over all hardware feeling, but the keys a the hardest to press down, I've ever played. The others around I can't say anything about, because I haven't had the chance to test.

Good luck. ;)
