Noise and glitches in the mixdown, dithering problem?

Post by PlasticSoul » Fri Apr 08, 2011 2:53 am

Hi guys, can you help me please?

I use ableton 7 and I noticed that when I export my mixdown .wav I'm getting some noises and glitches (very short, but they are there).

I always do the mixdown with all tracks at once resulting in one wav file, not separated wav files for each channel and I never got these problems before.

I googled about it and I think I'm getting a problem with dithering but I dont know how to solve it properly.

I read that for mixdowns I have to do it with no dithering and 32 bits, and when mastering I use 16 bits and dithering (triangular is the one I'm using).

Am I doing wrong?

:)

no idea , is your master level at 0db when u render ? this might give problems when rendering if is not to 0db...

yes, its not clipping, lots of headroom...

I have this problem right now. I export my song and the wav contains some glitches. Lots of headroom too...

Shouldn't be a dither issue, not sure what's causing it though.

It is not a dither issue. Are you running any third party plug-ins? Are they demos or cracked? Is the buffer setting high enough? Are you clipping on any tracks?

Im only using 2 vsts, but I used them plus a lottt more in other tracks and no problem. Normally I render in 32 bits, but now I selected 24 bits, triangular dither and no problem. Maybe to much load for the cpu? Im working with 512 sample buffer, 11.6 ms latency.

that makes me wonder if it's what you're playing it back in - some players don't like 32 bit.

24 should be enough anyway.

Maybe, but I exported a similar song before this, in 32 bits, and no problem. But you are right, 32 bits is to much I think, CDs are 16 bits after all...

If you are clipping your mixer, it might only be audible when you bounce to 24bit. If you bounce to 32bit you have a lot more headroom, so no clipping. Make sure you are not clipping anywhere.

I have a lot of headroom (peaking at -6/-4 db), but for the final render I put Ozone in the master channel for mastering. Ironic, because the glitches are audible in the 32 bit bounce, not in the 24. But I think is related to heavy load. I dont know if the latency setup matters when rendering (a off line process).

There's no need to dither if you're sticking with 32bit anyway.

Indeed, you cant choose a dither option if you choose 32 bits. But, why I have the glitches when rendering in 32 bits, and not when choosing 24-triangular dither? As I said before, I think is a cpu problem, but its the first time I have this problem.
