i would give a try to RME Babyface, i own the fireface and it is very sturdy unit.

Maybe apogge duet / one if you are on Mac side and don't need much I/O options.

As i know there isn't enough power on the headphones out on the babyface If it needs external headphone amp that is not so portable.

Whatever you pick, IMO the best one for you will be the one you're willing to spend the LEAST on. You'll get some immediate use out of it, develop some opinions about your own demands and expectations, and then will be well positioned for new models which will inevitably implement a Lightning or USB 3.0 port. My advice would apply if you had said Firewire as well.

I've already own firewire interfaces from digidesign and m-audio but now i need something portable and usb or usb3. (on the new i7 notebooks there is no fireface)

Not to hijack the original question but can someone recommend a 16 port XLR and 1/4" interface if you were looking to keep it under $2000.00?

I've got a Tone Port 8 channel that my band records with but we are constantly finding ourselves short by 2 or 3 inputs. We record all 8 channels at once into Ableton and it handles it great on my Windows XP laptop.

Ive been on a hunt as well, since my E-MU 0404 USB just doesnt work. Decided against Motu Microbook or the Roland Quad-Capture, but now i decided to wait for this instead:

If you don't require more inputs, both are around your price range. I'm thinking that 192 kHz sampling rate is going to sway me towards the Apogee in the end.

I'm using a Tascam US-144MKII because I liked the specs such as 96khz 24bit audio (and I had a Tascam TSR-8 analog recorder back in the day that was a lot of bang for the buck).

It's solid feeling, sounds ok with the headphones, but honestly it's kind of noisy. I have had other interfaces on the same power running with the same system and didn't get the kind of weird noise when using fuzzboxes (or anything that throws off harmonics). I'm running it gear through a presonus tube pre/channel strip and that helps a bit but basically it sounds like a hundred dollars (which is what I paid).

It's my first DAW that I've set up, so I just call it a lesson learned.

And you use that for live gigs with lots of people? Im guessing from your location - the answer is no as there is probbaly nothing but wild haggis' with huge teeth there

smart to mention Lightning port... will be likely the best choice when manufacturers adapt to it,
which could takr quite a while.

but I have to finish this album now! was nearly decided on the Motu Ultralite MK3,
but now I think Ill go with the Roland Octa Capture instead?
see the well written TapeOp and Harmony Central pro reviews for why
low latency, auto sens, supposedly a transparent sound quality
(though sub appogee! as all seemingly are. and with minor noise. )

i have a lot of grooveboxes to plug in at once, so it wil be worth having the ins.
getting a pristine dub of the energy from my live jams is what i want

I would say the new Komplete Audio 6 looks good from NI.
