8pre + Ableton - cue mix send to headphone out?

I'm trying to find docs on sending a cue mix from Live to just the front headphones output in the front of my Motu 8pre - has anyone been able to accomplish this easily?

All of the other audio can go out of the main out 1-2 to my reference monitors...using this in a DJ-like environment where I want to listen to a clip just in my headphones so the audience doesn't hear it

It looks like the Motu 8pre only has two outputs (1&2) which runs both out of your main trs outs and your headphone mix. Without two additional outputs (3&4) you won't get two separate stereo mixes.

You're able to have to mono mixes with your main out set to 1 and cue set to 2.

Hmmm...so you don't think there's a way to send the main audio to the left and right trs outs and then send the cue mix to the front headphones?

Maybe there's some trickery using the MOTU audio setup app...

Thanks for your help anyways

While they're two different outputs, they're playing the exact same channels of audio - 1/2. Your headphone out will need to be set to 3/4 to get a separate mix out of them. From what I can find on the Motu 8pre, there are no additional outputs you can route a separate audio mix to.

edit. my mistake.

yeah, I think that unless you want to go out mono and cue in mono you have pretty limited options.

ok - probably the best thing to do at this point would be to buy a mixer? I have an APC40 but that doesn't have any outputs

yeah, you'll need a separate soundcard with 4 outputs. A lot of people like the Audio Kontrol 1 by Native Instruments. You can get them as cheap as $120 or so on craigslist. There's loads of other options though but they'll all require four separate outputs for prelistening.

if the 8pre is like the ultralite and traveler, you should be able to choose the "outputs" that will get sent to the headphone jack.

like Yoseph said.

it should be in the MOTU audio setup app

i often set up a send channel that is routed to this output pair, and you can route the click there too.

Just had a look @ the 8Pre manual (http://www.motu.com/techsupport/manuals/):
Chapter 5 MOTU Audio Setup

Phones
The Phones setting lets you choose what you will hear from the headphone jack. Choose Main Outs 1-2 if you’d like the headphone output to match the main outs. Choose Phones 1-2 if you would like the headphones to serve as their own independent output, which you can access as an independent output destination in your host audio software and as an output destination for the four on-board CueMix DSP mix busses.
So me thinks, in "MOTU Audio Setup", set Default Stereo Output to: Main Out 1-2 & Phones to: Phones 1-2

You also have to set it up in Live: Preferences-Audio-Output Conguration -> activate both output-pairs.

And there you have it. Sorry for the misleading information.

Awesome - I just tried it out

In my Ableton set, I could hear all tracks through my monitors, and then when I set the cue out to 3/4, I was able to solo a track and hear it through my headphones

If I want to be able to hear the cue track by itself, I needed to make sure that the track wasn't activated, and then solo-ing the track causes it to be sent to my headphones - once I'm happy with that sound, I can simply activate the track, and solo another one if needed through 3/4.

Everyone's help is much appreciated.
