M-Audio Keystation 88es modulation wheel

Apologies if this has been covered (I did do some browsing).

Quick question:

How do I assign the modulation wheel to an operation in ableton.

Long version:

I just got an m-audio keyboard. The keys work as expected and the pitch bender works. After fiddling with the midi setup (selecting keystation pro and my device) I managed to get the volume control to work and the modulation wheel would adjust the vibrato in an organ sound. I'm not sure what I did after that (I fiddled with some of the midi options) but I can't work out how to assign something to the modulation wheel and it no longer alters the vibrato. I can tell it's sending midi info cos the light flashes when I move it. If I turn on the Remote and go into midi set up and move the wheel it assigns it to the target operation but it seems to me that with Remote turned on...the only thing that works is midi assignment (i.e. you can't play the keyboard and get sound) and so then when I turn off Remote, the keyboard is working again but I'm wondering if that is then bypassing the midi control assignment (hopefully that makes sense).

Found the answer via the M-audio forum.

My mistake was not realising (or remembering) to press escape to exit out of midi setting (Doh!!).

Revisiting my own problem cos I seem to have the initial problem. I've assigned the modulation wheel to increase/decrease the volume of one instrument but unfortunately it also modifies the vibrato. Any ideas anyone?
