Ableton Forum

I have not heard any news on when Live 9 is coming out. Seems to be very little activity on the ableton front lately...

Does anyone have a clue?

How about 8.5 first? I've already shelled out enough money for the crash cow. (yes, crash)

I can't find the thread, but someone from Ableton recently said on the forum that they were working on Live 9, so yeah, it is happening, even though the company has been quiet for so long.

Even if it were announced tomorrow, there would still be a couple of months of beta testing.

2 years is a long time. I expect we will hear some news this summer.

Two years is actually an average cycle. I feel like it usually takes Ableton about a year just to stabilize a version after it's release. If you look at DAW version histories you will see:

Cubase: about 2 years
Logic: about 3 years
Pro Tools: about 2-3 years
Reason: about 3 years
Digital Performer: 2-3 years

I like getting really savvy with my DAW before it changes, and I only like changes when they are stable.

Just sayin'.

2 years might be an average cycle for most DAWS, but it is not an average cycle for Ableton Live. As you probably know, Live 9 will represent the longest gap between releases. Regardless, perhaps instead of saying "2 years is a long time", I should have said "a lot has happened in the last 2 years"!

Between the explosion of touchscreen applications, the introduction and wide adoption of NI Maschine, and the ever more competitive pricing of music software in general, the bar has been raised a lot in the last couple of years.

More generally, people want to get away from the mouse. AKAI and Ableton may have addressed that issue with the APC, but where they brought some swiss roll to the table, Native Instruments dropped a 3 tier wedding cake on top with the introduction of Maschine.

I think Ableton have no choice but to bring some innovation to the table. Some DAW workflow refinements and a couple of new devices would not be enough to keep everyone happy and retain their crown as leaders in innovative, inspiring, "playable" software.

some months ago, way back in the forum threads, a link was posted pointing to the web site of one of those publishers that print the self-help/tips and tricks books for ableton. with my own eyes i was able to see that the help book for version9 was scheduled for release in december 2012. what they hope to fill the book with i have no idea as no one yet knows which updates and new stuff will come with v9.
just recently i have been nurturing a suspicion that ableton are preparing for something or other in the soonish future.
consider the recent free giveaway of max4 live when purchasing suite8 and the web is ablaze just now with various contests and competitions where the main prize is a version of live8. easy to believe that ableton were/are offloading the old stock. just a thought so far, no real proof either way.....................

I just want to see them do it right, and I am glad they are taking their time. I'm also tired of paying for upgrades that are really only updates. Besides, how many advances do we need to make music? There have been so many amazing tracks done with so little before Live even existed. I just want Live be rock solid and easier to use. I don't really care about any more toys, it should just WORK better. Good music can come from nearly nothing. Software should become more transparent to that end.
