Numark I/O Low volume - Cueing hell

Title really says it all, I have a numark I/O soundcard which does not have separate volume controls.
In Traktor/Dekadance/Torq/Mixxx the volume is great - lotsa headroom when I cranks the Cue or Master without distortion.
In Ableton however the volume quite simply sucks .. if I push the headphone volume past 0db its crunchy and nasty and the Master out is pretty low as well ... about -15db difference to other software.
Any ideas ?
And before anyone asks, there is no volume in a separate control panel unlike many soundcards, the software in use is supposed to drive it .. no independent controls in system prefs either (on mac).
