I just purchased a Focusrite Saffire-6 USB interface for recording to my computer. I am experimenting with recording myself accompanied by karaoke tracks in mp3 format. I put these into Live, then create another audio track for my singing via a mic. I listen to the accompaniment through headphones while singing the vocal track. The Saffire has a headphone jack and a mixer that can supply the accompaniment output from Ableton to the headphones and the input from the mic at the same time, so I can hear the band and myself. I'm using a Shure Beta 58A mic. However, although I know the Shure is well regarded as a solo mic for live performances due to its feedback-resistant hypercardioid pattern, when I'm singing with headphones, I don't hear any room feedback from my voice as I normally would when singing live. I'm beginning to wonder whether an omni mic isn't better for recording when one is not worried about feedback.

I tried playing the accompaniment through a speaker located behind the Shure, so that I was then singing without headphones, but the mic still picked up a bit of the accompaniment in the vocal track, although at low levels.

BTW, the mic is connected to my mixer, a Soundcraft 124FX that I bought primarily for live karaoke. I could run the mic direct in to the Saffire, but the Soundcraft has hardware FX and EQ. I know that I could get the same types of FX via Ableton, but I'm a rank beginner at Live, and it seems very complicated to me at this stage. I will save my "Live" questions for another post.

What do forum members suggest for this scenario?
