Need some midi drums advice

Hi guys,
I'm mostly new to this so bear with me, I'm trying to work out the best workflow for the following...
I'm building up rock tracks (real recorded bass guitar over drums a this stage)
I have Addictive drums VST plugin, built a custom kit, found a loop that made a good starting point, dragged it to a midi track and started tweaking and moving beats around in the midi note editor, changing velocities, copy sections etc to suit my needs.
I've done about a quarter of the song but am having trouble programming it since I can't loop single sections of the beat and listen to the live recorded guitar tracks at the same time. If I select an area of my midi note editor it will just start my real instruments from the first bar of the song rather than the part that I have selected on the midi track. I hope that makes sense.
Do I need to split up my audio track a bunch of times? Should my drums be in separate pieces (not just one midi track)?
Thanks
