Timecode Vinyl in Live (not Serato + Bridge)

Hi,

does anyone know if there is a plugin (AU or VST) that makes use of any timecode vinyl to control effects or clips in Live?

I found posts asking for this in the feature wishlist thread, but those are pretty much outdated.

I don't want to buy that expensive Serato hardware for this (I think Serato + The Bridge gives us this feature), so maybe anyone knows of a working plugin solution :-)

Thanks!

Ive had Live slaved to Traktor while Traktor is under timecode control. That kind of works within the limits of Live's ability to stay in sync. Works quite well as a way to pickup.

thanks, I will try Ms. Pinky then. seems to be quite difficult to make such a plugin (that is not intended, but could also be used for dj-ing ;) )

(found this after some googleing: http://createdigitalmusic.com/2010/01/m ... n-ableton/)

The Pinky VST v2.0 seems like exactly what I need... But I don't want the whole package deal and Max for Live... where can I get just Pinky VST v2.0 alone???

here is a video of ableton & DEcadance together.

DD does not give timecode control over live clips but it does give you 2 decks with timecode and sync inside of live for scratching or playing mp3's without importing them and creating wav's.

Ms Pinky M4L device only "imitates" controlling of clips, it's not actually scrubbing clips in Live, it's just using Live as a browser to load clips from a dedicated folder into the Ms Pinky device. However Ms Pinky could be use to allow time code vinyl to control all sorts of shit, i.e effects, video, etc. in Live. I've used it quite a bit, BUT Ms Pinky is not near as tight around the edges as the leading competitors. I much prefer the accuracy of Tracktor or Serato, when it comes time code vinyl manipulating audio.

For what it's worth, I think purchasing Ms Pinky in attempts to save money, is really just throwing money away. The competitors have a rock solid product where you can find discount used gear and licencing. If you dont already have Max for Live, purchasing M4L just to get Ms Pinky is silly, but then again you would have Max for Live, which is pretty fucking awesome.

My 2 cents would be try controlling fx with something else, and if you want DVS for audio, dont settle for saving money.

I've seen RANE SL1's and Audio 8, 4, and 2,s going pretty cheap these days.

I'm running Ms Pinky with a Traktor Audio 6 and couldn't be happier. I don't own M4L, so I haven't had a chance to check the plug in that loads audio directly from Live, which does look cool.

You can pick it up here http://www.mspinky.com/shop/

It loads the audio from a path you set in max, using Max for Live.

It's important to be clear about it to keep any confusion about. A lot of people think the Pinky M4L patch "scratches clips" or even plays those clips in Live. It does not. Live's clips simply act as a browser, using the name of the clips to load an external file into Pinky. For example, anything you do to the clip in Live, i.e. warping, pitching, etc... does not reflect in the Pinky device, unless the clip is saved out to the folder that Pinky's path is set too. SO you can use midi clips or blank audio clips inside of live as long as it is named the same as an audio file, in the dedicated folder.

True, and I can see how it's not exactly what everyone is hoping for, but it's still some really cool functionality which I don't think any other DVS offers. Thinking about it, I can see why not even the bridge offers the possibility of scrubbing clips or live sets back and forth with vinyl, it might require some big changes to Live's engine.

The Bridge does scrub a Live set back and fourth? Just not clips.

I guess I'm just over the whole issue. Browsing clips from Live into Ms Pinky (a less accurate, and less featured DVS), gets lame pretty quick. Plus there are a few more steps you have to take to get there. Honestly it does nothing special, it has no legs up on the comp. To get it to do something unique, learning M4L is a must.

Routing Tracktor into Ableton offers much more, especially in the realm of stability.

I have not messed with the Bridge much, and at first I balked at the idea behind putting a Live Set on a Deck in Serato, and not "scratching clips." It's been a while now, and honestly I think the Abes had the right idea to begin with. Hosing Live inside Serato. THAT is unique.

Now I realize all the hubub about scratching clips with timecode is an overemphasized need, if you wanna scratch Audio in Live route Tracktor to it, WAH LA!

Pinky is fun but you dont see a bunch of people using all it's cool functionality for a reason.

If I wanted to do have an enhanced DJ rig, then I agree about Traktor > Ableton.

I use ms. pinky in a looping performance rig, and this is a much better choice for me. I record clips from my master bus, and then use pinky to beat-juggle, or scratch. it has been very stable.

What I meant with the scrubbing part is that, when loading a Live set in a Serato deck, you don't get the backspin sound when pulling the record back. I think most people were disappointed with the Bridge because it didn't do all the cool things it could have done. Also, what IMO looks like the best feature in it, recording your mix into a Live set, requires a Serato enabled Rane mixer, which don't go for cheap.

On features, the only essential things I think Ms Pinky lacks is beat grids/auto sync and a way to use the VST's browser with MIDI. Other than that, it's got everything you need if what you want is to manipulate audio or video using vinyl, and having tested it a lot, I can say that using absolute or cue mode gets pretty accurate. Overall I think it's a very good and affordable way to build a DVS setup.
