Seems as though Ableton is trying to horn its way into the studio audio market. Do we think that Live 2.0 will be an honest-to-goodness alternative to other audio programs for people who want to record live instruments? This could be really cool even for people who have limited use for looping & time-stretching. What do people think?

I don't think Ableton is trying to horn its way into anything. It seems like they are letting Live develop on its own, adding features that users have requested and seem logical for the app.

Perhaps "horn" was the wrong word to use. The question remains though: if shopping for Nuendo, DP3, etc... and Live 2.0 comes out (and has a much more intuitive interface to my way of thinking), is it, in its new incarnation, suitable for such use (to record live instruments, mix them and make records regardless of an interest in looping)?

Perhaps Live will offer similar functionality for a lower price. If you don't need MIDI or VSTi's, then go with Live.

I don't think Live will pose any threat to Nuendo. Nuendo is a MONSTER and until Live incorporates video editing, 5.1 surround mixing and all the other post-production tools that make up Nuendo there will be no competiton between the two. They are completely different and made for different usage. However, I could see myself using Live a lot more as a studio app just because of the speed of the workflow. I think I'll always need Logic for soundtrack work and syncing to video. I don't see Live going in that direction. Keep your eyes on Metro 6 though. Looks promising.

Well, the user interface is quite different. Of course, you can by now do some things with loops in editors like Nuendo, CEPro or Samplitude, and you'll be sort of able to multitrack with Live 2.0 (or rather, can already so if you don't timestretch) - but in either case you'll have to work around a interface designed to be best at the other job. With the price of either down to a day or two of seriously professional work, making the one do the job of the other will only do for people who have considerably more time than money...
