No audio when freezing midi track for monotimbral synth

Hi all,
I'm pretty new to ableton and have also just got myself my first hardware synth. I am trying to put together a track that has various sounds built up on the hardware synth but to do this I need to convert them to audio as it can only play one sound at once.
I've read about freezing sequences in ableton / bouncing them to audio and figured I would be able to use this mechanism to do what I wanted.
The synth plays sound through ableton perfectly well when the midi track is in place, but then when I freeze the midi and drag the frozen clip over to an audio track it is empty and I get no sound.
Can somebody help me figure out what I'm doing wrong?
